Practice Description

Mr. Curington joined Boulware & Valoir as a Partner having practiced Intellectual Property law for nearly twenty (20) years. Prior to joining Boulware & Valoir, Mr. Curington spent nearly seventeen (17) years as in-house counsel for a leading global oilfield services provider. Mr. Curington’s in-house career began with a focus on patent and trademark preparation and prosecution for completions, subsea and artificial lift technologies. In addition to the prosecution work, Mr. Curington performed extensive freedom to operate (FTO) studies in collaboration with the engineering teams that he supported.
During his early in-house career progression, Mr. Curington served in various IP management roles in which his practice expanded to include extensive IP transactional work, including drafting and negotiating of joint development, licensing, and collaboration agreements. His transactional work included negotiations with various universities as well as suppliers and competitors. Mr. Curington’s career progression included IP management roles in both research and engineering and included technologies focused on drilling, downhole batteries, chemical fluids, downhole fluid and tool conveyance, seismic surveys, and pressure pumping.
In his last in-house role, Mr. Curington served as the global General Counsel for the well completion business and then the pressure pumping business. In the General Counsel role, Mr. Curington continued to have a substantial IP transactional practice and his work scope expanded to include overall responsibility for the IP strategy of the business. Additionally, Mr. Curington supported the M&A activity of the business and performed IP due diligence as well as general due diligence for M&A transactions. Mr. Curington also managed litigation and directed the overall litigation strategy on behalf of the business. As part of his global responsibility, Mr. Curington additionally implemented ethics and compliance policies and procedures and prepared global guidelines focused on adherence to hydraulic fracturing regulations and trade control policies and procedures.
